330 w 34th st - terraces

City: New York City

Year: 2023

Scale: 1,440 sq ft

Set in one of the busiest parts of Manhattan, at 330 W 34th Street we collaborated with architecture firm KPF to revamp three terraces in one building for a lucky potential tenant. The idea of a sunken garden to unify the landscape and pavers as one was deliberately accomplished by fabricating custom metal planters to fit between the masonry and paver system. The planters were designed with two heights: 6” and 10” just enough to become visual extensions of the ground while holding enough soil to support the living plants on it. The plant palette varies between lower plants such as the Kalanchoe, Jade plant, and Luzula Nivea, and on the medium height Carex, Hakonechloa. The background is made up of Fountain grass, Maiden Silvergrass, Stop Gigantea, and one of our favorites Hubricht’s Bluestar.
